Cadillac is having a renaissance thanks to EVs

And it’s all thanks to electric vehicles. The classic auto brand that’s become associated with the 4pm dinner crowd is enjoying a renaissance by slinging EVs, the New York Times reported. Cadillac now sells more EVs in the US than luxury rivals BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Porsche, fueling its best first half of the year since 2008. Almost 25% of the new cars Cadillac sells in the US are electric.

To do so, Cadillac has been successfully poaching customers from competitors. Roughly 70% of people who own electric Cadillac Optiqs and Lyriqs have switched over from other automakers, per the Times. And Elon Musk’s auto company has been a frequent target: One in 10 of those Cadillac buyers previously owned a Tesla.

Winning converts is a big reason why General Motors, which owns Cadillac, more than doubled its EV sales in the first seven months of 2025, while Tesla’s fell 11%, according to Kelley Blue Book. GM is now the No. 2 EV seller in the US behind Tesla.

The boom times may not last. Tariffs on autos and auto parts are expected to raise prices this fall, while the $7,500 EV tax credit expires at the end of the month after being scrapped in the GOP tax bill.

Is going 230 mph the answer? To boost its global appeal, next year Cadillac will become the first new team in Formula One racing since 2016.
